Cylinders come in two main varieties: solid and hollow. Understanding the difference is crucial for accurate volume calculations.

Solid Cylinders

A solid cylinder is completely filled with material. Think of:

  • A wooden log
  • A metal rod
  • A can of soup (the contents)

Formula: V = π × r² × h

Hollow Cylinders

A hollow cylinder has an empty space running through its center. Examples include:

  • Water pipes
  • Cylindrical tubes
  • Drinking straws

Formula: V = π × h × (R² − r²)

This formula calculates only the material volume, excluding the hollow center.
